The use of The Balanced Scorecard as a Tool for Organizational Development and Change (2025)
Robert Yawson, Amy Paros
The BSC is an Organization Development and Change (ODC) intervention tool as well as strategic management tool used widely in business and industry, government, and nonprofit organizations all over the world to streamline business activities to the goals, mission, vision and strategy of the organization as a way of improving internal and external communications, and monitor organization performance against strategic goals. This paper discusses the Balanced Scorecard (BSC) as a tool for Organizational Development and Change. The purpose of using BSC, the underlying assumptions, expected outcomes, and limitations of its use are discussed in the context of its epistemology and actual organization experience with its use. The paper concludes by analyzing, from the authors’ perspectives, the value of BSC as a tool for an ODC intervention and organizational leadership decision making. Is the BSC still relevant for future usage?
