This is an animal study using mice. 38 days after infection with SARS-CoV-2 the mice were administered a parkinsonian toxin (1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP)) and then euthanized after 1 week. Neuroinflammation and loss of dopaminergic neurons within the substantia nigra (motor cortex) was apparent. These changes were more prominent in those animals that were exposed to both the virus and toxin. The results suggest SARS-CoV-2 accelerated parkinsonism induced by MPTP in a synergistic manner.
